But today, Germany is staring at a surging far right – and the country’s mainstream politicians and democratic citizens, still by far the lion’s share of the population, are understandably rattled. Since then it has veered steadily to the far right, where its members tout barely veiled racism and Islamophobia. But studies show that time and again the accommodation of radical right positions benefits the hard right – and not its imitators. Moreover, democrats of all stripes should expose the far right’s populist arguments for what they are: exaggerations, falsehoods and demagoguery. Germany’s ascendent far right shows that all of Europe – and beyond, including the US – could be at a tipping point.

The White House says Biden has done nothing wrong and Republicans have no basis for an impeachment inquiry. Another Hunter Biden associate, Eric Schwerin, also told the panel that he was not aware of any financial involvement by Joe Biden in his relatives' businesses. A Washington Post fact check found that $7 million of that money went to Biden family members, most of it to Hunter, and none went to Joe Biden. A German far-right politician had dog feces smeared on her at an event in Daun, southwest Germany. Beatrix von Storch, the AfD's deputy leader, is known for her controversial remarks on immigration. Beatrix von Storch, the deputy leader of the Alternative for Germany party (AfD), said the attack was "disgusting" and vowed not let it discourage her politics. "Yesterday in Rhineland-Palatinate there was another disgusting attack on me [and] the AfD," von Storch, 52, said in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Police said in a statement that von Storch was attacked on Friday by a 35-year-old man who asked to take a photo with her and then smeared her with dog feces.

Internal gallery documents reveal that sales of Hunter Biden's art brought in $1.3 million. The messaging seemed to suggest that Hunter Biden's art patrons came from a rarified universe of collectors who had nothing to do with the hurly burly of politics. Hunter Biden did in fact learn the identity of two buyers, according to three people directly familiar with Hunter Biden's own account of his art career. In the past, Hunter Biden has privately suggested that he could arrange to have friends seated on the commission. In fact, according to the person familiar with Hunter Biden's account, Morris purchased the art through Biden's gallery.

A.I. and TV Ads Were Made for Each Other

Some of the people who make commercials today are worried that A.I. to make fake ads gives it a job it already excels at: assistant ethnographer, media-studies expert, unbiased auditor of cultural tropes. In “Synthetic Summer,” the partygoers seemingly don’t know how to drink: They hold cans a few inches from their faces or latch their lips to the sides. “Synthetic Summer,” for instance, has the DNA of a 20-year-old Bud Light commercial; it bears little resemblance to the brand’s latest Super Bowl spot. As far as brands are concerned, that’s fine: They need not train A.I.

Others want a rematch with the legally challenged Trump or say that the younger, lesser-known DeSantis would be a bigger threat to Biden. Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said she prefers Trump because Biden beat him in the 2020 presidential election and will "beat him again." Trump has proven he could turn out Republican voters and win the presidency, but he's under indictment and could face even more charges. "That said, this will be a tough race no matter who the Republican nominee is, and every Democrat needs to take it extremely seriously." And both DeSantis and Trump are pushing "extreme" agendas to try and "outmaneuver the other one."
Biden was asked multiple times Friday morning about the historic indictment of Donald Trump. Democrats have told Insider that Biden, for many reasons, needs to be quiet about it. I — I'm not going to talk about the Trump indictment," he said, when asked if he's worried about possible protests. But Democrats have told Insider that Biden, for many reasons, needs to be quiet about it. A White House aide on Thursday night told Insider that the White House would not have a comment on the indictment.
"Let Trump steep in his own juices." "Let Trump steep in his own juices." If Trump is indicted, Biden undoubtedly will be asked for a response in every interaction he has with reporters. Biden has been more rhetorically disciplined as president than he was as vice president and a senator, when his verbal gaffes were routinely used as punchlines. The smart move would be to say he'll let the criminal justice system take its course and let Republicans fight it out, said Bannon.
If an indictment doesn't cost Trump the GOP primary, it would hover over his general election campaign. "Anything that's good for Trump in a Republican primary is also good for Biden," Bannon said. And it's unclear whether Trump is the weaker opponent or if he can even win enough support from GOP primary voters to become the nominee. Democrats say they also welcome a nasty Republican primary, especially when Biden is expected to run without any significant opposition. The downside: Cutting through 'noise' could be hardIt's possible that a Trump indictment would make Americans so sick of the entire political system that "they say 'Screw this,'" Bannon said.
WASHINGTON — House Republicans asked the Treasury Department Wednesday to turn over documents related to the business ventures of President Joe Biden's family members, including "suspicious activity reports" connected to Biden's son Hunter Biden and brother James Biden. And Hunter Biden is under investigation by federal prosecutors in Delaware. Trump and congressional Republicans have called on the Justice Department to prosecute Hunter Biden for a variety of alleged misdeeds. In Wednesday's letter, Comer asked Treasury for records of suspicious activity reports related to Biden family members and their business associates. In addition to Hunter Biden and James Biden, the letter names Sara Biden, James Biden's wife and President Biden's sister-in-law, and Biden family business associates Rob Walker, Eric Schwerin and Devon Archer.

Democrats expect chaos next Congress as they face losing control of the House and possibly the Senate. They say far-right House members will be running the show as Kevin McCarthy struggles to control them. Between McCarthy and McConnell, Democrats view McConnell as the leader with more control over his caucus and they foresee future splits on legislation and priorities. Former President Barack Obama called it a "shellacking" when Democrats lost 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats in 2010. He expects House Democrats to lose about 30 seats, dropping from 222 to 190 and Republicans increasing from 212 to about 240.
Rocketing energy costs are savaging German industry

“We don’t need a crystal ball to see a further weakening of German industry in the coming months. The full impact of higher energy prices will only be felt in the last months of the year,” he said. Energy prices started rising last fall, and then shot even higher when Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, sparking an energy standoff between Europe and Moscow. Energy costs at Prysmian’s six German factories are expected to soar to €20 million ($20 million) this year from just €5 million ($5 million) in 2021. “German industry, the so-called ‘Mittlestand’, the small and medium [sized] companies, are quite resilient and adaptable,” he said.
Robert and Rebekah Mercer ranked among President Donald Trump's most influential backers in 2016. A representative for Priorities USA Action, a leading pro-Biden super PAC, said the organization wasn't underestimating Trump's reelection forces, Mercers or no Mercers. (Bossie, like former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and many others, has recently found himself back in Trump's favor.) The Cambridge Analytica data that the Trump campaign paid for was "so stupidly wrong" and a "complete joke," Spicer added. But sources familiar with the Mercers' political spending said they have no evidence that the Mercers are doing so.
